Painting with Darkness
In cinematography, we often obsess over where to place the light. But the real emotion lives in the shadows. The absence of information forces the audience to lean in, to imagine, to fear.
The Chiaroscuro Effect
Borrowing from Renaissance painters like Caravaggio, high contrast lighting creates depth.
"Cinema is a matter of what's in the frame and what's out." — Martin Scorsese
When I approach a scene, I ask: What do I want to hide?
My Standard Kit
Here is the gear I used for the "Nocturnal Narrative" short film:
- Key Light: Aperture 300d II with a massive softbox.
- Rim Light: Quasar Science tube (warm temp).
- Fill: Negative fill (black flag) to deepen shadows.
